VIPER Lunar Rover
2019 - presentFlight software engineer for NASA's Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), targeted for lunar delivery in late 2027. Developed new cFS applications and modified flight-heritage applications for onboard commanding, telemetry, and power-system interfaces. Led development and maintenance of the rover's continuous integration system in Atlassian Bamboo. This work included build scripts, build agents, and migration to a Docker-based environment used by the flight, ground, and simulation teams. Collaborated with the Ground Data System team on communications and command-and-telemetry interface control documents.

Air Traffic Management and Safety
2025 - presentSoftware lead on a successor R&D project applying the System-Wide Safety backend architecture to conventional air traffic operations. Sets technical direction and coordinates schedules for two engineers. The service ingests live FAA SWIM and AADC data feeds, periodic CIFP and NASR updates, and NOAA METARs. It integrates safety metrics and includes a visualization frontend built on OpenMCT and CesiumJS.
System-Wide Safety
2017 - 2025Software lead on an R&D project developing tools to demonstrate and explore safety technologies for unmanned airspace management. Set technical direction and schedule for teams ranging from one to four engineers over the life of the project, and mentored five interns, who contributed to the main codebase. Responsible for the backend architecture in Flask, PostgreSQL, and SQLAlchemy, integrating safety metrics developed by NASA researchers. Worked with those researchers to develop metrics in their preferred language, translated the algorithms to C++, and integrated the implementation into a unified service providing safety advisories to sUAS operators.
Prognostics as a Service
2017As an intern, extended the Generic Software Architecture for Prognostics (GSAP) with a REST API that exposed its prognostics capabilities as an online service. First author of the Prognostics As-a-Service paper.

X-Plane Connect
Developed extensions to the X-Plane data protocol and implemented a cross-platform UDP network service as an X-Plane plugin. Designed reference client implementations in C, Java, MATLAB, and Python, with a comprehensive test suite in every client language to verify both client and server behavior. Refactored a monolithic procedural code base into modular, object-oriented C++, and provided end-user support. One of the most popular repositories in the NASA GitHub organization, and used by several universities as part of their curriculum.
Compound Eye
Worked with a large group of interns and engineers on a new optical motion tracking sensor. Developed parallel simulation software to characterize the sensor's optical properties. Ran high-resolution optical simulations on NASA's Pleiades supercomputer, analyzed experimental and simulated data, and helped design a MySQL schema for the results.

Auto-tracking Antenna
Developed a two-axis proportional control system to track an aircraft in flight. Integrated data acquisition from a UAV autopilot with closed-loop control for reliable antenna positioning. Developed a messaging protocol to transmit data between a desktop computer and an Arduino motor controller.
United States Army
March 2006 - March 2010Combat Medic Specialist (68W). Honorably discharged.
Provided emergency medical care, basic clinical and preventative care, and first aid training for approximately one hundred soldiers as a line medic with an infantry company, in garrison and in the field. Emergency care training included NREMT-B certification and eight weeks of intensive military training in battlefield care. Clinical responsibilities included patient interviews, vital sign collection, and lab sample collection. Preventative care responsibilities included immunizations, tracking periodic wellness appointments, and maintaining medical records. Automated reporting of periodic medical requirements, which increased unit medical readiness.

UAV Forge
October 2014 - June 2015University of California, Irvine.
A continuation of the DARPA crowdsourced competition of 2011, aimed at building unmanned aerial systems that met the original competition requirements. The project was highly interdisciplinary, drawing students from mechanical and aerospace engineering through information and computer science. Worked on the controls team, on control, guidance, and stability augmentation for quadcopters, fixed wing aircraft, and tiltrotors.
FIRST LEGO League Competitions
2012 and 2013Irvine Valley College Applied Science and Engineering Club.
Primary organizer for two FIRST LEGO League competition events hosted at Irvine Valley College. A local robotics coach ran the competition itself. Organized the host space with the club and coordinated with campus event planners and administrators to secure venues, parking, and rental equipment. Ran a live A/V setup that streamed the competition areas on the gym floor to large screens in the gym, so that parents could follow the matches from the bleachers, and wrote custom software to display and control the competition timers.
